Teaching Philosophy

Teaching music has always been both a privilege and responsibility for me to help the students discover their unique talents and potential. I believe that musical ability is an innate ability which most children possess, and they can maximize their music ability when proper stimulation and education are given. Throughout the years of teaching, I have discovered that each student’s own personality and strength contribute to unique signature of sound and musicality of their own. My responsibility is built upon setting up a good standard of music and teaching them techniques to become skilled artists that are confident in allowing their ability to express themselves.  Here are some of my teaching philosophies and methods:

1. I give them achievable goals and appropriate challenges in each step of the learning journey for students to motivate themselves for higher level.

2. I presume nothing.  This helps students to understand and review the fundamentals of flute playing and musical concepts in deeper level.

3. I emphasize on how to learn, how to listen, and how to practice effectively.  My goal is to make them become independent learner with solid techniques and practice habits.

4. Within the structured framework of flute pedagogy, I try to accommodate students’ different learning styles, personalities, and learning pace since not everyone learns the same way.

5. I aim to teach students how to dictate music correctly as well as to play expressively.

6. Enjoyment of music is an important part of musical learning.  To achieve this goal, performance, building community, collaboration and mutual encouragement are essential integral part of music education.
